Of the 161 individuals arrested in last week's heroin bust, 3 were from Port Jefferson and Port Jefferson Station, according the the Queens District Attorney's office.

The bust, dubbed "Operation Heroin Highway" played out over the course of a year, originating in Queens and expanding into Nassau and Suffolk Counties. In all, officers seized more than 8,000 glassine envelopes of heroin, more than five kilograms of heroin, 2.7 kilograms of cocaine and five pistols, a shotgun and an assault rifle.

"The main defendants are accused of operating as a tightly knit ring that catered almost exclusively to drug buyers from the eastern end of Long Island, virtually turning the Long Island Expressway in the 'Heroin Highway'," Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement.

Phil Enright from Medford goes to local schools to talk to administrators about drug testing. He said both Port Jefferson and Comsewogue school districts take the drug problem very seriously and provide information and prevention programs whenever possible.

While the people arrested from Port Jefferson in this operation were all around the age of 40 years old, Enright said that drug problems can start in kids as young as 11. He thinks a Drug Czar in Nassau and Suffolk County may help address the problem.

"How about Bellone and Mangano appointing a regional Drug Czar to address the inefficiencies of the status quo and to focus on prevention, treatment, and recovery with some new fresh and bold solutions," he said.

The Queens D.A.'s office has released the names of those from Port Jefferson and Port Jefferson Station who were arrested. Some of the names or cases are sealed and are cases that may have been adjourned in contemplation of dismissal, the individual defendants may have pleaded guilty to a violation or the defendants are enrolled in a drug treatment program.

The following are the three individuals arrested in the heroin operation.

George Johnson, 41, Port Jefferson, was arrested on July 1, 2011, and charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He pleaded guilty on August 25, 2011, to third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. A bench warrant has since been issued for his arrest.

Bruce Miller, 45, Port Jefferson, was arrested February 2, 2011, and charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He pleaded guilty on April 14, 2011, to fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and was sentenced to five years’ probation.

Deborah Mojeda, 39, Port Jefferson, was arrested on October 21, 2011, and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. The case is pending.
