1. Sachem Patch reported on that in Holbrook, an Iraq veteran had his wheelchair stolen on Wednesday from the front of his home when he went out for a drive in his hand-controlled car. According to Suffolk Police, the wheelchair was described as blue with a large embroidered Purple Heart, a United States Army seal and military stickers.
2. In Three Village Patch, people are fighting for the Setauket Post Office to stay open. Closing the old Setauket post office will overload the main East Setauket office and rob the community of one of its most charming institutions, according to the several dozen residents who attended a community meeting with local postal officials Thursday night.
3. Smithtown Patch reported that the mild winter weather (up until Saturday, that is) has finally given the town a chance to wrap up its cleanup in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene and get a little ahead of the game for the weekend snow in the weather forecast.
4. Miller Place-Rocky Point Patch wrote about a Lake Grove woman who was sentenced to between 1 1/2 and 4 1/2 years in prison after she struck and killed a woman in a hit-and-run accident in 2010 in Miller Place. Reports indicated the driver, Nicole Shellard, was high on drugs at the time of the crash.
5. In Commack Patch, the school district is planning a new 9/11 memorial, which will feature a piece of steel from the towers.
