Holbrook Man Arrested After Attempted Robbery of St. James Store. Joseph Hogan, 33, entered St. James Stationery on Lake Avenue around 1:15 p.m. Thursday and tried to steal money from out of the cash register, police said.
Keys Stolen from Miller Place High School. A 17-year-old, of Miller Place, was arrested Jan. 30 and charged with fifth degree criminal possession of stolen property. He allegedly stole four school-issued keys from Miller Place High School.
Michael's to Occupy Former Borders Location in Stony Brook. According to shoppers, employees at arts and crafts store Michael's in Lake Grove have said the store is preparing to move about three miles away to the former Borders location at 2130 Nesconset Highway in Stony Brook.
Smithtown Tests Green Motor Oil in Town Vehicles. The town has tested a biodegradable, fully synthetic 5W-30 motor oil, called G-oil from Northport-based Green Earth Technologies, made from plant oils, vegetable oils and animal fats. The motor oil is designed to allow vehicles to go 10,000 miles without an oil change, versus the standard 3,000 miles, but is more costly.
One Killed, One Injured in Commack House Fire. Authorities rushed to the fire that broke out at a Deepdale Drive home at around 1:30 p.m. The fire was placed under control by 4 p.m. The fire claimed the life of a man and injured another Friday afternoon, according to a fire official.
