Help Identify This Fish Caught in the Long Island Sound

Another interesting catch from anglers out of Port Jefferson.

Another year, another mystery fish.

Sean Reilly Jr. headed out into the Long Island Sound from Port Jefferson Harbor on Thursday to do some porgy fishing and ended up pulling up something he did not recognize at the end of his line.

He described it as looking like a giant pleco.

Last year, of as a Northern Stargazer (Astroscopus guttatus). Patch reader, Donna Edgar emailed us saying the fish was possibly an Oyster Toadfish (Opsanus tau) instead.

We emailed Edgar, a Marine Biology teacher, to ask if she could identify this newest mystery fish. Her credentials also include being the first woman to have graduated from Southampton College in 1972 with a major in Marine Science.

The fish was caught just outside of the harbor and Reilly assured us that the first was safely released back into the water.
