New Owner Revitalizes Port Jefferson Station Spa

Euro Spa and neighboring Shear Bliss Salon team up to offer a full-day beauty experience.

Joe Sferlazza and his wife Marina have traveled all over the world – and in his latest venture, he has landed in Port Jefferson Station as the new owner of Euro Spa, which he said he has turned into an authentic European spa based on what he has seen in other countries.

The spa offers massages; a boutique; facials, peels and masks; clinical services such as laser hair removal, non-surgical facelifts, skin rejuvenation and vein therapy; and injectables such as Botox and Juvederm.

"We want to create this 'European cottage' type of atmosphere where you want to escape for the day or three or four hours. It’s an escape in your own back yard," he said.

Sferlazza said he took over ownership of the spa on Aug. 1, invested time and resources into redoing the rooms and facilities, and held a grand opening party two weeks ago. An entrepreneur who owns several businesses, Sferlazza said running a spa is an enjoyable experience.

"We took it over to have fun," he said. "We’re at the age now where our kids are older and we’re empty-nesters. We wanted to do something that we can both enjoy outside all our other nonsense."

Among the trends Sferlazza has seen since August, spa parties and couples massages are becoming more popular. He said there isn't much in the way of true competition.

"There are quite a few spas and they vary in degree of service. The challenge is getting people here to see what we have, to experience it one time, and then they realize what we have and what’s out there," he said. "We’re competing with salons that have a spa in an extra room, or Asian spas that are half the price of ours, but we’re not that type of business. This is an upscale, five-star spa."

One Yelp reviewer writes of Euro Spa: "The staff goes out of their way to make you comfortable and happy."

Formerly home to Eurotouch Spa on Nesconset Highway, Euro Spa shares commercial space with Shear Bliss Salon at 4515 Nesconset Highway – to produce a business model collectively beneficial to both businesses, which were previously owned as one business.

"We feed off each other. Their clients come in for hair and nail services, and they come in to us if they’re looking for facial services or massages," Sferlazza said. "And it works the other way. ... What it basically does is it encompasses a day spa experience."

Ann-Marie Englert, owner of Shear Bliss Salon since January of 2012, agreed, saying the synergy between the two businesses makes for one-stop shopping for beauty services. She said her goal has been to give the salon a down-to-earth, relaxing atmosphere.

"People feel like turned off with such a busy atmosphere," she said. "We try to avoid that. When people come here, it’s all family – nice and smooth and happy."

Next up for Sferlazza: New signage outside the building, which he said sometimes confuses people. The overall visibility on Nesconset Highway is great, which is a big advantage for a business, he said. The spa and salon create a peaceful juxtaposition positioned along the busy Nesconset Highway corridor.

"Our clients could live two blocks away," Sferlazza said, "but they come here and feel like they’re on vacation."
