Five Reader Comments of the Week
Check out what people are saying on Port Jefferson Patch.
Patch loves reader comments that help extend the conversation we begin in our news article or that inform us about things we didn't know. Part of our mission is to help give the community a voice with respectful discussions around the most important issues affecting Port Jefferson. Here we present some of the comments we received during the week on the website, on Facebook and Twitter.
• Chris S commented on our story this week about Hope House board member, Charlie Russo coming to the village board meeting on Monday to talk to the public about the nonprofit's work with young boys who need help. Many residents are concerned about the people they turn away and the element that Pax Christi attracts to the area.
In his comment, Chris said, "The men are turned away when there is no room for them or when they are drunk or high. They may be offered a cab ride to somewhere else, but you can't force someone to leave the village. The men are homeless and without jobs, so fill in the rest of the story... I don't want to diminish the good works of Hope House and Father Frank, but from attending the village meeting on Monday night, I came away with the impression that there is little consideration for the residents and business owners of this town by those who run Pax Christi." • When Diane Murray read the good news about Toast Coffeehouse being the subject of a new reality show she said that it will "add a little class to reality shows." On Facebook, Ed Cosgrove joked: "I bet Tiger Lilly is jealous."
• On a story about new technology that the village is considering for the parking meters, Chuck responded to a quote from a business owner complaining that people drive to other towns to avoid the parking meter fees by saying: "So with gas at $3.50 a gallon they will drive to another village to avoid paying $.50 for an hour of parking in PJ?" • When we asked people to review Theatre Three on Friday we ended up with more than we bargained for, in a good way. Jenna Rothestein commented to us on Twitter: "my dad proposed to my mom on the theater three sign 25 years ago<3." That sparked a conversation that led to the first in a series of romance stories we're doing on the run up to Valentine's Day.
• Responding to our poll on whether fire sirens are annoying, John Doyle commented via Twitter: "I bet folks consider them a nuisance unless they are the ones looking for help!"
