Port Jeff Mayor Talks to State About Relief
Mayor chides state for mishandling of pension estimates.

After a discussion about the way the state botched estimates of how much the village must pay into the pension system at a recent village board meeting, Mayor Margot Garant went to a state Mandate Relief Council to discuss the matter along with other ways New York can help to ease the burden on local municipalities, according to a story in The Port Times Record.
Garant was joined at the meeting by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone who also spoke at the meeting at SUNY College at Old Westbury.
The mayor spoke about innacuracies in the estimate the state gave to the village for its 2012 budget.
"After receiving an estimate for 2012, the village budgeted $480,000 while putting together the budget last year. However, the actual cost turned out to be about $580,000," reported the paper.

As bad as things are with the current Port Jefferson budget, we should all be grateful for Mayor Mike Lee's bold but necessary tax increase of 70%. Just imagine where the current Mayor's budget would be today without that increase.

Her answer sounds too "pat" to be believed. We are talking about seasoned Politicians.

The Mayor and her Board should be thinking of lowering the budget instead of increasing it .One Key area would be to lower the huge amount of money they spend for code inforcement. The parking Manager should hire metermaids to issue parking tickets and leave the rest to Suffolk County Police. Diamond

Since the Mayor "screwed up" the no-bid contracts which brought them to the attention of the State Comptroller's Office, one would think they would want a low profile.
These are Amateurs who will shoot themselves in the foot".
Wait till the State starts "rooting around" in their books, who knows what they will discover !

How about No Hiring, and getting the Constables some exercise, out of their cars, and into the streets writing tickets ?
It will give the Constables an excuse Not to go to the Rail and...ahem..."meeting every train".
