Snow Totals For Mt. Sinai Top 26 Inches, Port Jeff Gets 25.5 Inches

The National Weather Service posted totals for the area from the blizzard that stalled over the region overnight dumping as much as 26 inches of snow on Mt. Sinai. Port Jefferson recorded just under that mark at 25.5 inches. These measurements are from 7:44 a.m. Saturday morning.

Though it seems that these official numbers don't really tell the whole story.

Residents are reporting that drifts leaning up against doors have prevented them from going outside and pictures sent in to Patch show cars and vans burried up to their roofs.

The biggest hazard so far during the blizzard has been treacherous road conditions. Suffolk County Police shut down the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway to all non-emergency vehicles around 10 p.m. on Friday and New York State Police did the same for all State Parkways, including the Southern State, Northern State, Sagtikos/Sunken Meadow, Robert Moses Causeway and Ocean Parkway at 1 a.m. on Saturday.

Overnight the Long Island Power Authority's storm map showed nearly 200 homes without power in Belle Terre, with about 35 to 50 homes were noted around Port Jefferson having lost service. 

National Grid President John Bruckner said that National Grid will have 1,000 personnel on the ground early Saturday to assess the damage. Critical care customers including hospitals, nursing homes and sewage treatment plants will be attended to first. After that, areas with the most outages will be the focus, and lastly, the parts of the island with the least amount of outages.

The snowfall seems to have stopped in most places around Long Island and now the big job of digging out begins.
