The Dish: Sushi Roll Lunch Special

Sushi lunch with soup and salad.

When it comes to sushi rolls, the more the better is the way we like to look at it around here. PJ Sushi Teriyaki on Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station knows what we mean.

Two of their lunch specials–served Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.–offer you a choice of picking any two or three sushi rolls. Try to guess which one we got for lunch. That's right, we picked three rolls from a menu of 24 items. We got the spicy tuna with tempura flakes, shrimp avacado and spicy yellowtail rolls. The regular lunch special comes with miso soup and salad, a pretty complete meal.

Of course, we had to add a side dish and for that we chose edamame, beans that are not only fun to say, they're fun to eat. You pop them out of their salted shells into your mouth.

The sushi was delicious. The rolls were tight and on par with sushi you'd get for lunch anywhere else in the area, especially for the price. The tempura flakes were a pleasant surprise and the edamame was served steaming hot. The miso soup was good but the salad wasn't anything to write home about.

Someone asked us about the restuarant itself in the comments, which we neglected to mention. Glad you asked. PJ Sushi Teriyaki was clean and the service was quick, although it was not very busy when we went. There's the typical sushi bar seating, some tall tables in the front and a few regular tables along the side of the restaurant. It's definitely a good place for lunch.

One complaint was the chopsticks. They need to get better ones that don't splinter so easily. Even rubbing them together didn't take out all of the courseness.

The price for the three sushi roll special is $9.95 but if that's too much it's $7.45 for two rolls.

OK, we know what it looked like and what it cost. How did the sushi TASTE? Was it fresh, fishy, melt-in-your-mouth? Would you actually recommend it? Were there any other complaints besides the splintery chopsticks? What kinds of drinks are offered? Do they have desserts? Was the restaurant clean? Was the staff helpful? Did your meal come in a reasonable time?
The article could use a little more information. I expect to be in the area in the next few weeks and might consider trying it out.

Hi Kady, thanks for the feedback. I'd definitely recommend it for lunch if you're going to be in Port Jefferson Station and want some sushi for lunch. I'll add more details to the article. - Lon
