Town of Brookhaven Mulls Expanding Landfill [POLL]

Supervisor says town is dependent on the landfill for revenue.

In a recent meeting with environmentalists and civic leaders, Brookhaven town supervisor Mark Lesko said the town is dependent on its Yaphank landfill for revenue and is even considering expanding it, according to a report published Monday in Newsday.

The landfill brings in about $45 million in revenue for the town but is expected to reach capacity in about 17 years, Newsday reported.

Expanding the landfill "would result in extending the life of the landfill, but it would also ensure financial stability for this township for as long as this landfill is operational," Lesko said.

I feel for anyone who lives down wind from the landfill. Every time I drive by I wonder how the residents near the landfill deal with that smell and every year it is worse than the year before. When I am out on the bay in the summer I am disgusted at the sight of the dumps on the horizon.

Who made the "phone call" or made the "campaign contribution" ?

DEC calls off sludge dumping at Yaphank landfill
By Jennifer Gustavson | 03/25/2011 6:54 PM

State officials announced Friday they will no longer allow Brookhaven Town to accept non-hazardous sludge at its Yaphank Landfill.

The move follows an investigation by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation of the landfill after it received numerous odor complaints from residents, most notably students of a Bellport intermediate school that had to be evacuated after noxious odor from the dump overtook the school Thursday, DEC officials said.

In a statement, the DEC’s regional director for Long Island, Peter Scully, said “uncontrolled odors” and the emergency response event Thursday at the Frank P. Long Elementary School in Bellport is evidence that the practice “is unacceptable.”

Solids from wastewater treatment plants have been accepted for disposal at the town’s facility since the 1980s, Mr. Scully said.

Although the landfill facility is designed with a double liner system to prevent contaminants from reaching groundwater, as well as a gas collection system to capture and destroy landfill gases, odor impacts to the surrounding community has become a major concern, DEC officials said.

“While we recognize that the modification of the town’s permit may have financial implications, the DEC has an obligation to ensure compliance at facilities it regulates and to take action where failures are documented,” Mr. Scully said in direct reference to the school incident.

Brookhaven Supervisor Mark Lesko said in a statement that the town will no longer accept sludge at the landfill, as per the DEC’s request.

Why ?

Your'e taking the...ahem..."profit motive" out of it.

I'd say ask John Powell but he just passed on and was buried yesterday...but Lesko knows what makes money in Brookhaven...even "on the side" !

One of the things Lesko will shortly reveal publicly about this "government consolidation plan", is, he wants the Highway Superintendent to be an appointed position.

In the last election cycle of 2011, Rouse ran unopposed, it's not that much of a surprise..

http://patchogue.patch.com/articles/town-supervisor-results-lesko-vs-forte

What is a surprise is that this was brought up by John LaValle in Ought-3...2003..after it was "Pat Strebel-ed", as it were, and it was voted down...this is a lesson about Brookhaven politics and what Political Elites here think about...ahem..."the Voice of the people"...very little.

See this for some background...

and if "past is prologue" Lesko is following in Lavalle's steps to try it again !

All the "income" comes from the same place? US! Either a real estate tax, sales tax, park beach tax, mooring tax, boat ramp lanch tax, police tax, or pay to dump some trash tax on top of our home trash tax? How about some more fiscal responsibilitiy and SPEND less and stop raising all the TAXES or fees or other sources of "revenue". Wait till the beach tax is imposed on residences so 60% of that income is hen wasted on payroll for town employees to monitor and check the tags and stickers? The only dept showing value to me is the Rouse guy and the Streets dept. Mooring Permit tax/fee up double digits, boat ramp launch fee up double digits last few years? Oversold so many permits to all comers they had to turn people away on July 4th : aren't enough trailer parking spots to launch any more boats? Then the "cowards' from Public service come along and generate "more income" by ticketing boat owners for their wheels touching the parking lines, or for mistaken inspection or registration or other vehicle issues - while you car is PARKED and you find out whats going when you return from sailing or fishing?????? These cowards and NOT contributing to Public Safety in any way. Abuse of privledge and power - pure income generation. NO VALUE to the public and taxpayers. LETS CUT SOME EXPENSES before we go planning on how to get more "INCOME".

I so, so agree with these comments! The landfill is disgusting as it is now and it will continue to grow for 17 more years WITHOUT expanding. $45 million dollars from a landfill? We're depending on revenue from a landfill for that kind of money? CUT SOME EXPENSES BEFORE PLANNING HOW TO GET MORE INCOME! That's how my home budget works...
