New Programs Bring More Science to Port Jeff Classrooms

When the Port Jefferson PTA polled teachers last year asking what they’d like to see more of in the classroom the response was clear: science. The result is a series of targeted programs presented to students by the Long Island Science Center in Riverhead that started in December and will run through the next few months.

Bishop Opposes SOPA, Cites Concerns of Stifling Open Internet

Rep. Tim Bishop, D-Southampton, said that he opposed SOPA, a bill in the House of Representatives that sought to curb inline piracy of media. Bishop said that piracy hurts the economy and a solution is needed but the current legislation may be flawed.

Soup Kitchen Seeks Aid From Village

Marge Tumilowic, president of Welcome Inn, a soup kitchen located in Port Jefferson, came to the village board meeting on Jan. 9 to talk about the plight of locals who are hungry and poor and to ask that the village continue to use money from a grant towards the nonprofit’s work serving free hot meals in area churches five days a week.

Port Jeff Protestors Urging Obama to Investigate Banks (Photos)

Protestors who gathered on Thursday afternoon on the corner of Route 112 and Nesconset Highway said they were there to send a message to President Obama. They want the President to take action against the role banks had in the economic crisis and hold them accountable.

Hahn to Chair County Environmental Committee

Following in the footsteps of past county legislators to hold the fifth legislative district seat, freshman Legis. Kara Hahn, D-Setauket, has been appointed to chair the county's Environment, Planning and Agriculture Committee in 2012.
