How to Die in Oregon focuses on patients who chose legal physician-assisted suicide in that state.
The last movie in the Spring Port Jefferson Documentary Film Series is How to Die in Oregon by Peter Richardson about the lives of terminally ill patients in Oregon who decide to take their own lives in legal physician-assisted suicide. According to the movie's synopsis, in 1994, Oregon became the first state to legalize physician-assisted suicide by a fatal dose of barbiturate, if two physicians diagnose a patient as having less than six month to live. "In How to Die in Oregon, filmmaker Peter Richardson gently enters the lives of the terminally ill as they consider whether – and when – to end their lives by lethal overdose," the site says. All three schools used for event that drew more than 2,000 participants.
Port Jefferson School District played host to the 2012 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Festival on Friday March 30 and Saturday March 31 where more than 2,000 music students from Suffolk County came to play and hone their talents. It was a big undertaking for Michael Caravello. As director of Music and Fine Arts, he was the liaison for the district. Caravello had to organize the event including figuring out logistics for instruction and performances in classrooms across all three of the school’s buildings for thousands of musicians and helpers. Winners will play in a recital this June at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center.
In March, fifth grader Amy Chang from Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in Port Jefferson shared a first place win in a piano competition at the Steinway Used Piano Gallery in Melville. She tied a sixth grader from East Setauket in the Late Intermediate Division of the competition held by the Suffolk Piano Teachers Foundation. Chang won by playing Etude Allegro by Yoshinao Nakada, according to a statement issued by the foundation. Seventy-two other students competed in five separate divisions. “In this Rock/Rap dominated era, it is noteworthy that the immortal music of such composers as Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff are continuing to be convincingly performed by many of today’s generation,” the statement said. Theatre Three film festival opens on Tuesday.
The first of three films in a festival at Theatre Three this month focuses on themes of spirituality and faith. The first film in the series put on by The Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council will show Tuesday night at 7 p.m. and is called A Better Life. Acording to the Internet Movie Database, this rated PG-13 movie is about a Los Angelas gardener who is trying to keep his son from falling in with gangs and immigration agents while he struggles to give him opportunities that he neevr had. Last year's festival brought together members of various religious organizations to discuss the movies with audience members. Esteemed jazz vocal group New York Voices sang to a sold-out crowd at the Staller Center for the Arts Sunday night, according to Julie Rulon Greene, marketing director for the theater. "Such a good mix of songs," she said in an email. "From 'Sing, Sing, Sing' to Paul Simon's 'Old Friends.'" "They got a standing ovation and sang an encore," she said. Rulon Greene said the group, know as one of the most prominent jazz vocal groups still performing today, performed both a cappella and with a backing group of drums, bass and piano. Head out on Saturday to see three local musicians perform at St Gerard Majella Church in Port Jefferson Station for Homegrown Music Café, a monthly concert series featuring Long Island and regional singer-songwriters and bands. Door open at 8 p.m. Proceeds from the $5 donation at the door go to the St. Gerard Majella parish outreach program, which feeds and clothes hundreds of Long Islanders. The musicians are not paid for their performances. According to its website, in its first year the concert series raised over $3,000 for the outreach program. Student musicians represented school from both elementary and secondary levels.
Port Jefferson sent 29 students from the district to play in the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association (SCMEA) All-County Festival on March 10 and March 11 this year. According to a statement from the school, the elementary school and secondary school students went to be a part of the competitive event, joining witb student-musicians from across the region. Elementary school chorus teacher Meagan Finnerty also went to the festival. Finnerty is chairperson for the SCMEA Division I chorus. Art walk and pet adoption event seeking artists.
We've seen hundreds of events come and go in the community, but how often does one pass you by that you wish you hadn't missed out on? That's where we come in. Exhibit currently on display at elementary school.
Louise Brett, whose historical paintings of Port Jefferson are currently on display at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, says that even back in elementary school she excelled at art . “I was always the best one,” she said. Now in her 80s, Brett can still rival most others when it comes to painting and drawing. Her paintings of Port Jefferson’s past made from old pictures and postcards are currently on display in the large group room at the elementary school. Excited about the show, Brett says that she still paints every single day. She has over 80 paintings and two murals hanging in her home. Brett and her twin sister, Augusta, were born in Setauket in 1928. The family moved to Port Jefferson a few years later and the sisters attended …

Caroline Strauss given honorable mention in Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
Freshman Caroline Strauss from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School was given an award of honorable mention at the 2012 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for the Northeast, according to a release issued by the school. "Champs Elysees," Strauss's digital photograph received honor based on the judge's criteria of originality, technical skill and sense of vision.
