Hauppauge Realtors Help With Spring Cleaning at Port Jeff’s Hope House

Volunteer work was part of an annual corporate day of giving back to the communities they serve.

The real estate agents from Keller Williams Realty Associates in Hauppauge traveled to Port Jefferson on Thursday, May 10 to help Hope House Ministries spruce up its yard and restore an old barn as part of a corporate day of giving. During their annual RED Day (Renew, Energize and Donate), thousands of the agency’s associates across the country and in Canada head into their local communities to take part in volunteer projects to renew and energize the neighborhoods they serve, according to their website. Twenty-two agents from the Hauppague office of Keller Williams Realty Associates spent the day with Hope House doing yard work and flower planting at two housing buildings and at the office on High Street. They also restored an old barn on…

Anglers and Bait Shop Owners Have Mixed Feelings Over New Fishing Regs

Looser restrictions mean more and bigger fish for anglers.

Ask the average fisherman and he’ll tell you that the less restriction on fishing the better. More fish, bigger fish and a longer season means more fun out on the water. Just this month, the New York State Department of Conservation loosened restrictions on fluke, porgy and black sea bass, meaning that the agency thinks the populations of those species are healthy and plentiful. “These regulation changes reflect improvements to populations of scup [porgy], black sea bass and summer flounder [fluke],” said Kathy Moser, DEC Assistant Commissioner for Natural Resources, in a statement announcing the expansion. Moser pointed to porgy – a popular game fish among kids and adults – as being particularly robust. Fishermen and bait and tackle shop …

Bridgeport Officials Coming Around to Ferry Relocation Plan

According to CTPost.com story, $30 million plan to move Bridgeport dock to East End of city is growing on city leaders.

Connecticut officials are warming up to the idea of a $30 million relocation of the Bridgeport ferry dock to the East End of the city, according to an article on CTPost.com. The article states that the new proposal is growing on leaders largely because of its economic revitalization impact, to an area the publication called "one of the city's most distressed" neighborhoods. An official from the mayor's office said that the proposal would bring jobs from Long Island to Connecticut, though Fred Hall, general manager of Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry Company, said details have yet to be figured out. "Our plans are still evolving," Hall told Port Jefferson Patch. "We have numerous scenarios to consider so speculation as to what positions or …

Village: Thousands Come to Port Jeff For Boater’s Festival

Organizers say it will return next year.

Village officials estimated that around 4,000 people came to Port Jefferson each day over the weekend for the Maritime Boater’s Festival to shuck clams, look at speedboats and dodge pirate canon fire. Although village spokesperson Jill Russell said that she thinks a few thousand people came to the village each day it was hard to judge. “It’s tough to guess with activity spread over the village and end to end,” she said in a phone interview. The beautiful weather didn’t hurt attendence. The temperature in the area reached the upper 70s over the weekend. Red Dog, the East Coast distributor of Focus Stand Up Paddle boards was giving out free demonstrations in the Harbor. Holly Maggio, 18, and her mother Sarah came down from Bohemia to get a …

Port Jefferson Farmers Market is Back With a New Manager

Third year for successful market welcomes back some vendors and brings on new ones.

Donna McKeown is an eight-year resident of Port Jefferson and a cookie maker. In the first year of the Port Jefferson Farmers Market, McKeown was there selling her cookie called "The Junkie," filled with pretzels, potato chips, bittersweet chocolate, coffee and marshmallows. She made this decadent delight from her home-based business, D.K. Cookie Company. This year, she has moved from vendor to manager of this year’s Farmers Market and predicts that it will be bigger and better than ever. McKeown has two young children, Seamus, 5, who is in Kindergarten at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School and Annie Grace, 3, is in preschool. She worked as a buyer in New York City for many years but says she is now in sales and marketing at a company in …

Chit Chat Cafe Now Open, Serving Turkish Cuisine in Port Jeff Station

After more than a year of prep, Turkish cafe opens for business.

The Chit Chat Cafe is now open for business serving all types of Turkish food for breakfast, lunch and dinner at 1597 Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station. The cafe also doubles as a Turkish food market. Back in February, owner Semiral “Sam” Catalbas, told Patch that she had been rennovating the restaurant space for a year and was looking forward to opening soon. The Grand Opening didn't happen until Spring, but she and her partners are looking forward to serving the food of their homeland - Catalbas is originally from Istanbul - and are putting their trust into chef, Bora Pala, who was previously at Angora Turkish Grill in Medford. Turkish style food isn’t as popular as other types of ethnic food on Long Island, like Chinese, Greek or …
