Snap A Photo of Saturday's Super Moon

Saturday's full moon will be bigger and brighter than usual.

On Saturday, when you look up in the sky the moon will look like a so-called "super Moon," a bigger and brighter version of the regular full moon. The actual moon will be the same, it'll just look different according to NASA: The full Moon has a reputation for trouble. It raises high tides, it makes dogs howl, it wakes you up in the middle of the night with beams of moonlight stealing through drapes. If a moonbeam wakes you up on the night of May 5th, 2012, you might want to get out of bed and take a look.  This May’s full Moon is a "super Moon,” as much as 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full Moons of 2012. Scientists call this giant moon a "perigee moon" because the moon's oval shaped orbit takes it on a path around the earth that…

What was the Biggest Issue that Affected Your Vote?

Patch wants to know what you think.

In local elections community issues are at the forefront of many people's minds. While the presidential races garner more top headlines, the local elections are closest to the day-to-day lives of the people in the towns and villages Patch covers. We asked some voters what their hot button issues were when they voted. On Tuesday morning, Bob Nathan said that he liked and respected Angie Carpenter but some of the things she did during her campaign made him vote for Steven Bellone. "When Carpenter attacked Bellone unjustly about his raising taxes (Babylon Town taxes are amongst the lowest on Long Island and the taxes she referred to were school taxes, which Bellone has no control over) that made me swing to Bellone," he said. "Unjust …

Fiore-Rosenfeld Wins Brookhaven 1st Council District Race

Incumbent keeps his seat, gaining 55% of the votes.

The votes are in and Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld beat Ed Munoz in the race for Brookhaven's first council district, 6,986 to 5,645. The incumbent garnered 55 percent of the votes. At his headquarters in Stony Brook, Munoz conceded the election at about 11 p.m. to a crowd of supporters. "It's been an incredible run," he said. Munoz, a retired NYC police officer, said he campaigned for a year and a half and knocked on 8,000 doors. "I'm a fighter and I'm coming back," he said to applause. Borrowing a phrase, he said "people want change." "Not that bad yet," Munoz joked. "But we'll get them." He called it a "shame" that only 25 percent of those eligible came out vote. "It should be 95 percent," he said. "We have 47,000 registered voters in district …

So what you are saying is that the Republicans purposely lost the presidential election just so they could make the Democrats look bad? Have you happened to notice that the whole world's money is bad right now? Unless we back up our own money like our forefathers warned us to do, there is no President, either democrat or republican, that can help us. You are just being mean to others and not …   more ›

Slow, Yet Steady Election Day Turnout

Many polling places report a steady stream of voters have turned out.

Despite the fact that this year's elections are all local affairs, around Port Jefferson, voter turnout has been quite steady in many places and exceeded expectations in others, according to coordinators at various polling places. “The day went quick,” said Annemarie Slocum, a voting coordinator at the Norwood Avenue Elementary School in Port Jefferson Station. “The traffic is nothing like a presidential race but better than the primaries.” Slocum said that the word to describe the voter traffic was “steady.” That sentiment was repeated in polling place after polling place around the area. “It’s been constant,” said Bob Strong, who was at the polling place in Village Hall in Port Jefferson. Strong, who is a former mayor of the village said…
