Anglers and Bait Shop Owners Have Mixed Feelings Over New Fishing Regs

Looser restrictions mean more and bigger fish for anglers.

Ask the average fisherman and he’ll tell you that the less restriction on fishing the better. More fish, bigger fish and a longer season means more fun out on the water. Just this month, the New York State Department of Conservation loosened restrictions on fluke, porgy and black sea bass, meaning that the agency thinks the populations of those species are healthy and plentiful. “These regulation changes reflect improvements to populations of scup [porgy], black sea bass and summer flounder [fluke],” said Kathy Moser, DEC Assistant Commissioner for Natural Resources, in a statement announcing the expansion. Moser pointed to porgy – a popular game fish among kids and adults – as being particularly robust. Fishermen and bait and tackle shop …

Village: Thousands Come to Port Jeff For Boater’s Festival

Organizers say it will return next year.

Village officials estimated that around 4,000 people came to Port Jefferson each day over the weekend for the Maritime Boater’s Festival to shuck clams, look at speedboats and dodge pirate canon fire. Although village spokesperson Jill Russell said that she thinks a few thousand people came to the village each day it was hard to judge. “It’s tough to guess with activity spread over the village and end to end,” she said in a phone interview. The beautiful weather didn’t hurt attendence. The temperature in the area reached the upper 70s over the weekend. Red Dog, the East Coast distributor of Focus Stand Up Paddle boards was giving out free demonstrations in the Harbor. Holly Maggio, 18, and her mother Sarah came down from Bohemia to get a …

Village says during boater's festival canons will blast in the village.

To celebrate the Port Jefferson Maritime Boater's Fesitval over the weekend, pirates will once again invade the village. During the show they will set off canon that will be quite loud. "Please be advised that the pirates will be 'booming' their canons on Saturday and Sunday," reads an alert on the Port Jefferson Village official website. The canons will burst in the air at Noon, 12:30, 2:30 and 4 p.m. from Harborfront Park, according to the village. "The hospitals, police, ferry, neighboring communities and neighboring nursing homes have been advised, so no one will be alarmed as it is quite loud," the alert says.

Nonprofit Donates $6K To Village Center

Port Jefferson Harbor Arts and Education Conservancy formed eight years ago to support Village Center and its programs.

The Port Jefferson Harbor Arts and Education Conservancy presented two $3,000 checks to the village on Monday night for senior citizen programs and audio and sound equipment for the Village Center. Made up from members of the community, the non-profit was formed to help fund programs and activities at the Village Center and the Harborfront Park, according to Vice President Naomi Solo. One check came entirely from a donation by the Morrison family specifically earmarked for senior citizen programs and equipment to be used for those events. The other $3,000 was raised by the conservancy and will be used to pay for audio and sound equipment for Village Center programs. Town Beach and Marina Parking Fees Upheld

Councilwoman Jane Bonner introduces resolution to withdraw the fees, but the town board votes it down.

The Town of Brookhaven on Tuesday upheld the beach and marina parking fees established about a month ago, despite an attempt by one town council member to comb through the town budget to find savings that would offset the cost of repealing the fee. The Town Board voted 3-4 against rolling back the fee, with council members Jane Bonner, Tim Mazzei, and Dan Panico voting in the minority. By working with various town officials, Bonner said she was able to find $625,000 in offsets within the town budget to withdraw the fee without sacrificing overtime costs budgeted for town operations. Her plan included eliminating three positions that are currently vacant due to the town's hiring freeze. She called it "painless ways to come up with the cuts …

Village: For East Beach Reconstruction, Focus on Seawall Not Sand

Most of the funds for construction comes from FEMA.

Damage done to Port Jefferson beaches by multiple storms over the last few years has resulted in a severely shortened beach with much of the sand eroding through the sieve-like 100-year old jetties on either side of Mount Sinai Harbor. According to trustee Lee Rosner who has been coordinating the beach restoration project, the village is expected to put out packages for public bid by next week. The reconstruction comes in two phases, according to Rosner. At East Beach, repairs to the steel sea wall, revetment, bath house repair, parking lot, sidewalks, ramps, utilities and other site work constitutes the first phase and should cost around $1,450,000. Phase two will comprise of dredging, replenishing sand and some planting at a cost of …
