6 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day Locally

Use this list to get out and help the environment and have some fun on Earth Day.

Still looking for something to do for Earth Day? Here’s a list of six suggestions in and around Port Jefferson for you to help out and feel good while doing it.

5th Annual Great Brookhaven Clean-up

On Saturday, join up with thousands of your neighbors for the annual Great Brookhaven Clean-up. According to a statement announcing the event, the Town expects over 5,000 residents to participate. The clean-up is held in cooperation with Keep America Beautiful, Inc., and will draw almost 3 million volunteers in more than 15,000 communities across America.

In Port Jefferson Station, neighbors will meet at 9 a.m. on School Drive in front of  the sump, (cross street is Jayne  Blvd) in Port Jefferson Station to take part in cleaning up.

“Friends, families, and residents will be cleaning up the sump area which is adjacent to a playground,” said Dina Simoes-Rodrigues. “The Town of Brookhaven has donated bags, gloves, tee-shirts, etc. so if anyone wants to come participate, they can just show up and they'll be greeted with smiles.”

There will also be a clean-up on Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai Harbor starting at 9 a.m. as a part of the event.

Curby, the Town’s recycling mascot is expected to head down to School Street in at 11 a.m. At noon, he will be at the Cedar Beach clean-up.

The Port Jefferson Business Improvement District is once again hosting its annual Earth Day Clean-up. Meet at the at 9 a.m.

Refreshments and t-shirts will be provided to volunteers. Help for an hour or two cleaning up the village by picking up litter, pulling weeds, spreading mulch or do one of the other clean-up tasks planned for the day. Please call 631-403-6BID if you have any questions. Clean-up ends at noon.

Join Captain Dave and Coastal Steward and spend the day helping to clean up Mt. Sinai Harbor. It’s a great way to help out the community and environment all at one time.

Meet at the cul-de-sac at Crystal Brook Hollow Road in Port Jefferson. Remember to dress in layers. Water, snacks and gloves will be provided. Volunteers should pre-register by going to the website.

Join Fred Drewes behind the Heritage Center at the crop and farm machine on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. for an informal “Over the Fence Garden Chat.” Chats canceled if it rains.

Head over to the Maritime Explorium with the kids on Saturday. Recycle water bottles and grow something green to help keep our atmosphere clean.

Create a Craft From Recycled Material at the Library

learn to make a Garbage Wreath. Program starts at 2 p.m.

On Sunday at Port Jefferson Library make an “Upcycled Lunch Box” at the Port Jefferson Teen Center. Bring in a clean one-gallon plastic milk carton or water container and librarians will show you how to make a lunch box.
