Construction Continues on Often-Flooded Lot

Paving set for Monday at Trader's Cove site.

Sure, construction in the Trader's Cove parking lot behind Starbucks in Port Jefferson Village is has made it a touch harder to find parking in town, but that has to beat parking in a lot that can flood at the nearest deluge.

According to the village, the constriction, which kicked off in May, is moving closer to the end, with paving slated for Monday.

The lot has been plagued with flooding issues, as heavy rains pouring down hills into the heart of the village have often submerged the lot, with some unlucky drivers ending up with parked cars filled with water.

Contractor Kings Park Industries is managing the project. Here's their progress, from the village's website:

  • June 18: KPI filled-in the soft disturbed areas with a sub-base of compactable material, covered with asphalt. The lot was swept of loose material.
  • June 19: KPI is surveyed the lot for high spots on the existing pavement and will make needed repairs and adjustments.
  • June 20: It is necessary to install bollards to protect street light poles in the parking lot. Preparation for the bollards should be completed.
  • June 21: KPI planned to mill the parking lot, a process that results in a rough but even surface that can be opened to traffic.
  • June 24: KPI will pave the lot. This work could run later in the day beyond the normal 3:30 p.m. quitting time. There should be no parking in the area while the paving is being completed.
Let us know. Will you be pleased to see the lot fixed? And has your car ever gotten swamped in the old lot?
