Fishing Report: Catching Porgies Galore and More Keeper Fluke

We've gotten reports of keeper flukes and porgies all biting out of Port Jeff and Mt. Sinai harbors.

The boats will be hitting the water all weekend for Memorial Day trying to limit out on the keepers. Here is some of what the anglers are saying about the action out there on the North Shore around Port Jefferson and Mount Sinai harbors in the Long Island Sound.

Candy from reported on her fishing blog on noreast.com about the bad weather at the beginning of the week and some fish that didn't make the grade on Tuesday.

"Well I have to say even though the weather today started out awful as the rest of the month, it ended up pretty darn nice late today," she wrote on noreast.com.

She said that a few people were able to get out there and saw lots of fluke.

"Lot's of shorts but there are some keepers out there too," she wrote. "We had Kevin, Brian and Anthony stop by they had 19 fish and only one keeper but it was 22 1/2 inches."

Another trio of fishermen reported constant action with at least 50 fish but only three keepers.

"So the keeper ratio is starting to place," Candy said. "There are lots of blue fish out there and porgies are showing and also lot's of stripe bass."

Captain Barb from Luv2fish Charters who goes out of Ralph's Fishing Station in Mount Sinai Harbor reported on noreast.com that she had a "banner day" on Wednesday morning too.

"Early bite was pretty sick with bass, blues and fluke all working the nice pods of bait," she said. "Had a slow period during the day and hit some nice ones again before we headed in."

She also reported that on Tuesday they caught fluke up to 27 inches.

"On fire with the boys from Jersey," Captain Barb reported.

SeaLion heading out of Mt. Sinai said that he went out on the outgoing tide on Wednesday morning  and his oldest son caught a keeper fluke on his first drop. That wasn't all.

"He then proceeds to catch two others, personally limiting out while me and the kid score no keepers. Only shorts," he said. "We were both outfished."

Captain Desmond reported that the porgies were attacking the lines on the Celtic Quest this week.

"Beating up the porgies right now as we speak," Captain Desmond from Celtic Quest reported on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

He also posted a video of the trip here.

On fluke Captain Desmond said it's "been spotty locally, some days good some days slow."

From the look of the reports, the rain and thunderstorms scared lots of people out of the water at the beginning of the week. Weather reports for Memorial Day weekend look great for fishing. Partly sunny on Saturday, Sunday and Monday with temperatures in the high 70s to low 80s according to Weather Bug.
