Fishing Report: Pick of Species on the Sound

Plenty of action for anglers on a variety of fish out on the water right now.

This time of year, you have some choices when it comes to fishing on the Long Island Sound. You can try for stripers, blues, porgies or fluke. They’re all out there (theoretically) and each one offers a unique opportunity for some fun and possibly a great meal. What’s better is that they all can be caught in the areas outside of to Cedar Beach.

Lately the word on the water is that fluke are coming up short but the striped bass are hot on the line.

“Stripe bass fishing in unbelievable right now at buoy 11,” said Candy Caraftis of in Port Jefferson. “Also lots of fluke around. A lot of shorts, but there are keepers too.”

It’s true. On the sound by Buoy 11 on the outgoing high tide on Saturday and they caught four striped bass, two of which were keepers. According to all reports, Buoy 11 is hot with the striped bass and it looks like a parking lot around there most days.

Port Jefferson Patch editor, Lon Cohen also hauled in a 33-inch striped bass on Saturday by Buoy 11. He also nearly pulled in what looked like a keeper fluke on a pole set up for porgies but it will have to go down as the “one that got away.” See pictures from that trip .

Also, the FellowShip reported that he saw the fares on the Celtic Quest jigging for stripers on Saturday.

Captain Des confirmed it in his report on the website saying that “the local diamond jigging for bass is still excellent as well as is the porgie fishing.”

On Saturday, Capt JP from the Osprey V in Port Jefferson reported that the morning trip “saw great porgy fishing, quickly getting our limit and then switched gears to fluke and put together some good action on the shorts with a fair amount of keepers with James Oh of the jersey boys fishing club leading the way with his limit of nice fat fluke.”

Candy reported that there are also “plenty of small blues around.”
