For Upper Port Jeff Residents, Future Uncertain Amid Increased Crime

Discussion of needs to revitalize upper area of village focus on clean up, not build up.

Resdents came out to a planned meeting on Oct. 5 at Village Hall to further the conversation about the village's plans to revialize upper Port Jefferson. The discussion turned from planning of commercial development to safety and cleaning up the streets as people complained about increasing crime and vagrancy in the area.

From Port Times Record:

One resident, who would not give her name, said she wants the village to first get the homeless off the streets and clean up the litter and traffic congestion. "Start with that, instead of more buildings, trolley carts," she said. "You know what, everybody? Say goodbye to your village, because it's becoming a city."

are nothing new and according to residents it's getting worse.

What do you think the village should do in upper Port Jefferson?

Until 2 minutes ago, I was only aware about the existence of Port Jefferson and Port Jefferson Station. My local geographical knowledge suddenly improved but.... I still don't know where is the border between the Upper and Lower Port Jeff. Maybe we should replace the Village Constables with Border Police (LOL)!

I would say Sheep Pasture Road is the divider for upper and lower Port. The Village goes to the tracks, the school district to Sheep Pasture Road (i.e. Highlands is Comsewogue School District). Like downtown, there seems to be a lot of transient businesses, nothing stays except Tara's and a small handful of others! Perhaps lack of parking is an issue?

The Harbor Hills - St. Charles Hospital area are topographically higher than the Upper Port. Should we call them "the High Lower Port" ?
