The Heritage Trust in Mt. Sinai is looking to hear from as many community voices as possible regarding the

The Heritage Trust Board of Directors will hold an open meeting at the Heritage Center, 633 Mt. Sinai Coram-Road, on Nov. 29 at 7:30 pm. to get feedback from the community.

They have also made available a survey to submit to the trust on their website. Direction to obtain the survey, which must be done via their email list, are available here.

Many have spoken out about the controversy on Patch.

Kara Kilgannon commented, "If there were a Hannukah celebration, I do not believe that Christians would expect the Menorah to be called "The Holiday Candelabra" just so that all may attend."

On Facebook, Gerard Hall wrote, "It is, was and always will be a CHRISTMAS TREE. Stop the secular nonsense and messing with our country's culture and traditions."

Also on Facebook, Caryl Adler Swanson suggested a compromise. She said, "It should be a holiday celebration! Then light the Christmas tree and the Menorah or vice versa if Hannukah comes first!"

It should be all religions or none. And if we are in fact putting up a CHRISTMAS TREE for the holiday season along with menorah the name I'm fact should be a Christmas tree we haven't changed the name of the menorah..... if the petition is not satisfying then put it to a vote in the community send something out to all mount Sinai households.

I attended the meeting last night and am in FAVOR of changing the name to a Christmas Tree. If you attended, the board made it clear that they too see it as a Christmas Tree and had merely taken over the civic's HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING EVENT which they started in 1996. They also made it clear that the menorah lighting is not run by them but when the Temple here in Mount Sinai asked to use their location, they agreed it would be something nice to do for the community. As of last night 80% of the survey takers were in favor of changing the event name. So why are we still talking in circles about the issue? Why can't people get off of the internet and try volunteering with the trust, that will REALLY get your voice heard. After last night I immediately signed up to help volunteer. But, I would also like to know where in the bible they mention anything about a Christmas Tree? And like I said, I am in favor of calling it a Christmas Tree, what I am not in favor of is some of these nasty comments when the board made it CLEAR they would change if, if the community wants.

In my opinion, a holiday event or celebration would include representation of all religions ie a Christmas Tree and a Hannukah Menorah. There is no such thing as a "Holiday Tree."
