HISTORY: 1959 New Year Dip in Port Jefferson Harbor

Historical photo from the village archives.

According to Ken Brady, the village of Port Jefferson had one member of its Polar Bear Club: Nick Malvo. He'd take a "'Happy New Year' dip in the icy waters of Port Jefferson harbor," according to Brady.

This picture taken on Jan. 1, 1959 shows Malvo surrounded by friends after his winter swim that year.

"Malvo, a painting contractor, swam regularly throughout the winter and was known locally for wearing short-sleeved shirts in the coldest weather," wrote Brady in the village's historical archive.

I would see Nick 'Mavros' (shorten from the Greek Sur-name of 'Mavrophilipos'), who was my Uncle Steve Poulos' Father-in-Law every year at Cedar Beach, Mt. Sinai...
