History: Aunt Sally Jones of Port Jeff Turns 103

In 1908, villagers turned out to wish longtime Port Jeffersonian a happy birthday.

Back in 1908 residents of Port Jefferson turned out on July 28 to wish longtime resident, Aunt Sally Jones a happy 103rd birthday, according to a report in the New York Times.

With her years “resting lightly upon her” the villagers came to her home to “wish her continued health and long life.” Her daughter, Mrs. Pricilla Smith, who was 80 years old at the time, help receive guests.

Jones was a local gal, born in Mount Sinai, and except for a brief excursion to Brooklyn she moved to Port Jefferson at 15 years old and never left, building a life for herself.

She said that she attributed her long life to “Hard work, plain living and lack of worry.”
