History: Cross-Island Marathon Race Kicks Off in Port Jeff

Marathon starting at Port Jefferson ferry ended in Patchogue in 1973

A cross-island marathon kicked off at Port Jefferson on June 16 at the and ended in Patchogue at Shorefront Park back in 1973. The race started at 8:30 a.m. and was a total of 15.5 miles. Officials expected over 250 to enter the race and were planning six trophies and free t-shirts to the first 100 finishers.
