Hurricane Irene Damages Property, Downs Trees

Winds causing havoc around the area.

Reports from around Port Jefferson and Mt. Sinai are coming in from people waking up to damage to homes and trees that were felled overnight.

Kristy Bohne who lives in Mt. Sinai and owns in Port Jefferson reported to Patch that she woke Sunday morning to a frightening crash when a neighbor’s trampoline hit the side of her home, tearing some siding. The wind carried the trampoline into backyard.

“Then into our stone patio breaking the steps and parts of our fence then into our pool, cutting our post light in half and ruining our favorite tree,” she said. “Then jumped the fence again, crashing to my other neighbors house and finally getting stuck between our homes.”

On Twitter, @AikiHal told Patch that Port Jefferson had “serious wind; tons of leaves and tree debris around.”

“I don't see any downed trees in my neighborhood,” he said. “Power is fluctuating.”

School board member Bob Ramus reported to Patch through Twitter that he saw “lots of leaves and a few small branches so far.”

“Village Code has East Broadway closed by Grant Street,” he said.

“Lost three trees and two sections of fence,” reported @RonMasone on Twitter.

Elizabeth Ann Castrogiovanni is in Mt. Sinai and said “we are fine.”

“Lots of wind still but not even power loss,” she reported. “I'm very concerned about Port Jeff though. 'Drowned meadow' looks pretty vicious on main street during normal rain. That is the place I'm afraid to see right now.”

Megan Colleen Smith said she was sitting at the Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance headquarters, where the village has its emergency operations center.

“It’s all good here,” she reported.

Lori Ressa said on Facebook, “No power. Trees down. Upper Port is a mess.”

Also on Facebook, Leslie Sells Long Island said that she lives off of West Broadway and they lost power for an hour.

“But it's back on already,” she said.
