Irene Who? Locals Hit Beach Before the Hurricane

As threats of Irene destroying Long Island beaches arise, Long Islanders are hitting the beach with a vengeance.

With reports that Hurricane Irene is less than 48 hours away, Long Islanders filled up Cedar Beach in hopes to enjoying one last sunny day.

With their kids in tow, friends Melissa Barone and Kerri Bowman, took the day out to enjoy what they called "the calm before the storm."

"People are too crazy about it, I’m not 'worried' but I am a little concerned," said Barone.

"I’m just here for the kids enjoying the day, the last sunny day of the weekend," added Bowman.

While Bowman and Barone seemed at ease for what's to come, Barbara Hayman of Miller Place was not as easy going about it.

Though Hayman, who was with her daughters and friends, said she's worried about the coming storm and the safety of her friends and family, she's also worried about the beach itself.

"I would just take caution," she said. "I’m worried more about the beaches and the erosion. My family and I love the beach."

With news of potential devastation for Long Island and its beaches, Long Islanders took them head on.

"Do I think the storm will do damage? Yes," said frequent beach goer Chris Romano. "Am I letting it ruin my day? No. I’m enjoying this day like any other day. When the storm comes than I will worry,"

Everyone seemed to have the same motto: enjoy the day and worry about tomorrow when it comes. No one knows for sure what is going to happen.

A jet skier who only gave his name only as "Joe" was skeptical about all the reports he'd been hearing.

"I am sure we will survive," he said. "I feel like it is all for T.V. I doubt it will be bad."
