Local Teen Band Rocks the Port Jeff Farmers Market

A rock band made up of all local teens played the opening weekend of the Port Jefferson Farmers Market.

Kanenas, a rock band made up of boys all from , played at the opening day of the in the village on May 15 raising $161 for the American Red Cross Relief Effort during a two hour set playing 24 songs.

Alex Proios, 14, Trevor Barnes, 14 and Alden Mohacsi, 14,make up the band Kanenas, which means “no one” in Greek. The band was joined that day by friends, Christopher Julich, 15, and Andrew White, 14.

“We’re really lucky to have the Farmer’s Market and we’re glad to be back supporting the Red Cross relief effort for the victims of the Japanese tsunami,” said band members in a statement.

Band members think that Sunday mornings at the Port Jefferson Farmers Market is a “good time in so many ways.”

Kanenas has performed at fundraisers before most notably one at their school for Friends of Karen, a local charity that helps families with children who have cancer. Last year they also raised over $250 playing the Port Jefferson Farmers Market to support VH1’s Save the Music Foundation.

After seeing other live bands perform at the farmers market last year the band members wanted to be a part of it.

“When they got the go-ahead they put together a 24 song set list – The Beatles, The Doors, Bob Marley, Green Day and more along with 6 original songs and practiced for hours, weeks before,” said Ilona Mohacsi, a representative for the band. “They played for three straight hours and got a very positive response last summer–kids dancing while their parents shopped, folks singing along and they even got hugs from the vendors.”
