News Nearby: Islip Supervisor Called to Active Military Duty

A look at the headlines from nearby Patch towns.

There's plenty of news happening on any given day in Port Jefferson, and the same can be said of the towns around us. Here's a look at what's making headlines in nearby Patch towns.

From Sachem Patch: Islip Supervisor Called to Active Duty. Beginning in July, Islip Supervisor Tom Croci will most definitely be out of the office. According to Newsday, Croci will be temporarily leaving his post for an overseas military tour that could last until spring of 2014. The supervisor said his mandatory mobilization was confirmed within the past week, but he does not know where he will be stationed or for how long.

From Three Village Patch:
School Board Takes Stance Against High-Stakes TestingStudents in Three Village face too many high-stakes standardized tests, and the state needs to re-evaluate its focus on using those tests to evaluate both students and teachers – that's the sentiment behind a resolution on high-stakes testing unanimously adopted Tuesday night by the Three Village school board.

From Smithtown Patch:
Vecchio Narrowly Wins GOP NominationTwelve-term Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio has won his party's nomination in his bid for a 13th term, though only by a narrow margin. Members of Smithtown's Republican Committee on Monday voted in favor of Vecchio by a margin of 74 votes, according to Newsday, over his challenger, Councilman Robert Creighton. Creighton, who has drawn the ire of the town supervisor since his announcement to run, has vowed to face the incumbent supervisor in a primary.

From Kings Park Patch: Grant Will Fund Electronic Signs for 2 Schools. Part of a $50,000 grant secured by the Kings Park School District through state Sen. John Flanagan will be used to purchase electronic outdoor signs for two Kings Park schools. District Superintendent Susan Agruso announced at the board of education meeting Tuesday night that Kings Park High School and William T. Rogers Middle School would be getting electronic outdoor signs.
