Photo: On A Cold Day in Port Jeff, A Scarf For A Statue

Bronze statue outside of The Steam Room adorned with a scarf.

One of the figures in the sentimental statue of a mother reading to her two children just outside was adorned with a white scarf over the weekend, a tender touch given the poignant memories the statue holds.

George Wallis, owner of The Steam Room and , among other businesses in the village, had the statue erected when an employee of his died while giving birth to twins years ago, according to Mayor Margot Garant.

The statue's inscription reads: "In memory of Darla who died giving life at 37 years." It depects a mother flanked by a little boy and girl, all of them reaching to turn a page in a book on the woman's lap.
