Photos: An Afternoon in Pirate's Cove

A favorite place for boaters to gather and hang out in Port Jeff.

That hum you hear as you enter the cove to the northwest in –known as either Mount Misery or Pirate's Cove (or even the Sand Pit) depending on who you ask–is a totally different kind of wildlife. A popular spot in the summer time, boats of all sizes can be seen rafted up together four or five across.

The cove is surrounded on all sides by enormous dunes offering quite a bit of protection. The story is that a mining company dredged sand in the area out of the harbor landscape in the early 20th century, leaving behind this little bay perfect for modern boaters to enjoy.

Explores who climb to the top of the dune get a great view of the entire harbor on one side and the Long Island Sound on the other. The top is 177 feet above sea level according to the Mountain Zone, a hiking website.
