Sightings Of Missing Dog, Marcy Gives Owners Hope

Residents setup traps to rescue lost dog that has been missing for four days.

On Nov. 26, a family took to Facebook to ask residents to keep a look out for their missing dog, Marcy. She was recently adopted from Last Chance Animal Rescue. Shortly after her adoption, she was in the back yard and jumped the fence, taking off near William Street in Port Jefferson.

Marcy is wearing a purple hoodie and a pink collar with her owner’s information on a dog tag. She is currently wearing their old dog's tag, which has the name Sandy on it.

Since the Facebook post, sightings have been pouring in. Those possible sightings include: Feasts for Beasts in Mount Sinai, Pathmark on 347 near 112, and possibly Infant Jesus Church.

Update: 11/29 5:45 p.m. -- UPDATE from Kathy Devlin-Huber: Amazingly Marcy has been spotted multiple times including by me!! I was in the woods since 9:30 this morning with another volunteer Christina (shes the contact person on all the flyers). We decided at noon to go home & eat. I stayed in the area a little longer & hung some more flyers running into another volunteer Jessica doing the same so went home. I wasn't home a minute when the home owner (Matt) on Main St. who so graciously has been letting us use his driveway to park & access the woods, calls Christina to say he's looking at Marcy standing in his driveway!! So back out Christina & I go! Christina called Dory from Save-a-Pet, who came out & set up a trap & we all left the woods to let the trap & the McDonald's cheeseburgers we threw in there do their magic!

Another voluteer Andrea & her son Sam showed up & we all hit the condos that back the woods & cemetary to hand out flyers & knock on doors. That's when we spoke to multiple people who had spotted her all morning-- limping but otherwise fine! She'd been in & out of their yards lining the woods & cemetary all morning!! We called another trapper to set up a 2nd trap behind the cemetary & while waiting for Eddie the Dog Trapper to come, a condo owner with our flyer calls saying he watching Marcy cross his yard. I dropped down into the yard with Andrea's son Sam & 1 minute later we run right into Marcy!! It was Amazing!! Limping but fast, she hopped back into the woods and was gone!!  Eddie the trapper set up his 2nd trap & there's now 4 of us monitoring the traps round the clock. We found the area where she'd been laying all morning & set the trap nearby. We've been advised that ALL searches of the woods need to be called off so that we don't spook her.

We need the traps to do their job & if people go in the woods searching we'll just push her out of the area & away from the traps . This morning I was dredding the outcome thinking Marcy's too injured & its been too cold but Marcy apparently is a survivor & not giving up so neither are we!! I'm praying this story will have a happy ending after all!!  Thank you for all your support in helping us find her!

Update: 11/26 10:22 a.m. -- UPDATE from Kathy Devlin-Huber:  As amazed as we all are that Marcy survived 2 hits, we're doubting she could have climed that steep hill and feel she may be hiding on the lower area of the woods or in a yard of the homes right on Main St.  We've had people in the area looking in those woods for over an hour, knocking on doors and asking home owners if our volunteers can look on their property for her.

Update: 11/26 9:15 a.m. -- UPDATE from Kathy Devlin-Huber: There were rumors last night that a dog matching Marcy's description was hit by a car. No further information was available at the time. Then this morning, the woman who tried to help her just contacted LCAR saying it's definitely Marcy. She actually was hit two times, but that she got away from her and took off into the woods behind her house across from Infant Jesus.

We have people heading there now to search the woods! If anyone wants to lend a hand head over to Infant Jesus. It's the woods behind the homes on Main St. South of the USA gas station. Dress warm and be careful.
