State Installing New Accessibility Sidewalks in Port Jefferson

Work will continue south along Main Street to High Street.

If you've wondered what all the hubbub was about at the corner of Main Street and West Broadway in the village this week as crews worked on the side of the road, newly accessible sidewalks were being installed to better accommodate persons with disabilities, according to a New York State Department of Transportation Spokeswoman Eileen Peters.

Peters said that the work in the village is meant to do upgrades to provide new ramps and sidewalks that meet current American with Disabilities (ADA) standards.

"This helps improve pedestrian facilities for all users," said Peters in an email to Patch. "Our NYSDOT project team has been working with the Village of Port Jefferson and the work by the intersection near the ferry is expected to be completed tomorrow."

After the work is completed on the Main Street intersection the DOT plans more work south along the state road from Arden Place to High Street, which is expected to be complete in about four weeks, weather permitting.

"Our project team has been working with Suffolk County police and local businesses on a daily basis to coordinate construction activities and help minimize the impact of construction on pedestrians and businesses," said Peters.
