Storm Surge, High Tide a Big Concern for Port Jeff

New moon, high tide and storm surge make for a "perfect storm" combination.

Officials in Port Jefferson were concerned with the potential threat to people and property from the storm surge of between 4 to 8 feet from Hurricae Irene combined with .

A “perfect storm” of sorts for the Long Island Sound may cause the waters to rise much higher than usual, meaning streets and homes along the Sound might experience dramatic flooding from Port Jefferson to Mount Sinai.

“I’m concerned about Port Jefferson,” said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko on . “There will be significant storm surges in downtown Port Jefferson.”

He also said that home on the cliffs might also be in danger.

“We’re expecting severe erosion on the North Shore,” he said.

Mayor Margot Garant said during the call that the village planned on and that the village was “going to be closed on Sunday.”

High tide is expected at 11:12 a.m. on Sunday.

State Assemblyman Steve Engelbright expressed his concern for Port Jefferson before the storm as well when talking to a Patch reporter saying that the village "has very low elevation and it floods."

He even said the village can revert to a state that gave the village its original name.

"I've seen Port Jefferson at high tide with the storm surge in the past," Engelbright said. "It becomes 'Drowned Meadow' again."
