The Maritime Explorium Under Construction

On Saturday, May 14 at noon there will be a ribbon cutting to celebrate the grand opening at a new location and official renaming of the Children's Maritime Museum as the Maritime Explorium. The move into the Chandlery Building allows for more space in the museum for new exhibits, and a balcony looking over the harbor.

According to the Explorium's website, the historic building was constructed 107 years ago by the Bayles family "as a provisioning store during Port Jefferson’s ship building era" and is one of the last remaining buildings of the era.

"The Maritime Explorium is a family learning center that celebrates Long Island’s remarkable maritime heritage and invites the next generation of citizens to live, work and play responsibly in our sensitive and beautiful coastal environment," said museum board president Jacqueline Grennon Brooks.
