Blinking Light at 3-Way Intersection Turns to Red

After Hurricane Irene, blinking yellow light in downtown Port Jeff turned red.

After 20 years blinking yellow at the three-way intersection of Broadway and Main Street in Port Jefferson village the light at that spot has turned red, but not everyone many have noticed.

"I did but apparently no one else did because I almost got creamed by a truck this morning," said Jessica Earl of the change.

It's not clear why the light was changed but after Hurricane Irene, the light went out. Mayor Margot Garant said that the Department of Transportation came to work on it.

"They changed it to the blinking red," she said.

According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicle's manual,a flashing red light is the same as a stop sign. A drive must stop, yield the right-of-way, and go when it is safe. A flashing yellow light means drive with caution.
