Vandals Hit Church Sign in Port Jefferson Station

The sign in front of Calvary Baptist Church in Port Jefferson Station was vandalized sometime between 10 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. last night, a church leader said Tuesday.

The graffiti reads "God Iz You" in orange letters on one side of the sign, while it reads "The Free Spirits" on the other side in black paint.

"We're here to serve the community, and to have this happen in our community is very disheartening," Dr. Michael J. Rubino, associate pastor, said.

Rubino said in addition to the graffiti, empty bottles of Corona beer were found littered around the sign.

"It's most likely just a small group of young people that were out drinking and think it's funny," he said. "It's a sign of the times, but we're just going to persevere and keep serving the community."

Calvary Baptist Church is a congregation of 160 people founded 55 years ago, and is also home to North Shore Christian School and the Boys & Girls Club of Suffolk County.
