Veteran Spotlight: Vietnam War Marine Wanted to Play Drums

Janis Henderson spent her time in the service working for Pentagon.

When Janis Henderson joined the Marines during the Vietnam War she originally wanted to play in the armed force’s band.

“Back then women weren’t allowed to play drums in the band,” she said.

Instead, she became an officer and was put to work in the intelligence department at the Pentagon. Henderson, a volunteer in the Mt. Sinai Fire Department, was at a .
