Village Launching New Look for Rocketship Park

Work on the park is expected to begin next year.

A new look for the 70's era playground known as Rocketship Park is about to take flight with work expected to begin next year.

Port Jefferson board members will discuss the plan at Monday evening’s village board meeting and public input will be allowed according to an article in Newsday. The plan calls for rides that will are inclusive to children who have disabilities, a water fountain and a shaded sitting area.

The sand which covers the ground of the park will be replaced with a poured rubberized surface, according to the story.

Formally known as Clifton H. Lee Memorial Park, the "Rocketship Park" nickname came from the uniquely designed playset that was installed in the park around 1972, according to Ron Carlson, the former director of the Port Jefferson Recreation and Parks Department. That playset was then replaced by a second one.

Costs of the renovation will be paid with $300,000 from village funds. The Village Board voted on Aug. 5 to seek up to $300,000 from a state matching fund.
