Woman Opens Heart, and Home, to Dog with Cancer

Erica Kutzing of Port Jefferson said it was love at first sight: As soon as she saw an Instagram photo of Lucia, a 12-year-old pit bull who had been diagnosed with cancer, she wanted to adopt her. Lucia had been surrendered on June 28 to a shelter in New York City known for being a kill shelter, and was only given two days to find a new family before she was to be euthanized. Working together with animal rescue specialists, Kutzing – who has been a volunteer at Save-a-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center in Port Jefferson Station for 14 years – was able to adopt Lucia and brought her home on July 2.

Police Rescue Jet Skier Stranded Off Belle Terre Shore


A New Jersey man whose jet ski ran out of gas was rescued from the Long Island Sound about two miles north of the coast of Belle Terre on Sunday night, Suffolk police said. Luis Rivera, 37, was found at approximately 10:40 p.m. after being stranded for about four hours.

Incident Report: Beach Assault, Truck Theft Reported in Port Jefferson

Police responded to an assault on the beach near Danford's and to the theft of a pickup truck on Sheep Pasture Road. 

Woman Succumbs to Injuries After Hit-and-Run Accident in Mt. Sinai

The 56-year-old woman who was critically injured in a June 23 hit-and-run accident in Mt. Sinai has died, Suffolk police said Thursday. Karen Benjamin of Coram was out for a jog when she was struck at approximately 11 a.m. on Canal Road just west of Route 83 in Mt. Sinai.

Comsewogue Board Takes Step to Control Poison Ivy on School Grounds

To attack the problem of poison ivy on school grounds, the Comsewogue school board voted 6-0 at a recent meeting to approve a one-time application of a pesticide aimed at controlling poison ivy.
