Week in Review: Port Jefferson Gets Fresh Coat of Paint, Shellfishing Closed

DEC: Shellfishing Temporarily Closed After July 4

Better hurry up and get your shellfishing in before Independence Day on the north shore. 

Shellfishing will be temporarily closed across 243-acres of Port Jefferson Harbor starting on the Fourth of July, the state's Department of Environmental Conservation said. The closure is expected to last until July 11.

Back in March, Port Jefferson Patch delivered a gallery showing the signs of wear-and-tear in the village, noting that superstorm Sandy and the February blizzard, among other storms, had really taken a toll on the buildings and fixtures in town.

Fast forward to June, when several buildings in town, including the Harbor Square Mall and Chandler Square, got a fresh coat of paint.

Boating Exhibit Docks At Port Jefferson Village Center

Several boats will be docked along East Broadway in Port Jefferson this summer, paying homage to the town's past. 

The "From Shore to Shore: Boat Builders and Boatyards of Westchester and Long Island" exhibit opened at the Port Jefferson Village Center on July 1, The Port Record Times reports. The exhibit, running through Sept. 2, is offered by  Long Island Traditions and ArtsWestchester.

Coast Guard Sweeps Local Waters to Prevent Intoxicated Boating

As part of "Operation Dry Water," a nationwide effort to reduce accidents and eliminate fatalities due to boating under the influence, the U.S. Coast Guard participated in an interagency sweep of Long Island waters, including Port Jefferson Harbor, between June 28 and June 30.

The goal was "to reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents, injuries and deaths among recreational boaters by increasing the visibility of enforcement the weekend before Independence Day, a holiday known for drinking and boating," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Waterfront Revitalization Aims to Add 'Green Space'

A final presentation for the waterfront revitalization plan was received well by the board and most residents at its final presentation at Village Hall Monday.

Bob Tumilowicz, Project Manager for the Village of Port Jefferson, and Michael Schwarting of Campani and Schwarting Architects presented the plan as the next step in culminating years of work.
