State Closes Rose Avenue in Reconstruction Project

The street that connects Canal Road and Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station has been closed until further notice, the state Department of Transportation announced Tuesday. That street, Rose Avenue, is just south of the intersection of Route 347 and Route 112, where a major traffic improvement project is underway. The DOT said the round-the-clock closure is expected to last until the fall of 2013.

Road Work Ahead for Port Jefferson's Main Street

Drivers should start finding alternative routes to Main Street/Route 25A in Port Jefferson will be repaved over the next two weeks. New York State Department of Transportation announced they be closing down lanes of Main Street/Route 25A to repave from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m on various days over the upcoming weeks. 

Centereach Woman Charged in Crash that Killed Bicyclist

Suffolk police on Friday arrested a 54-year-old Centereach woman whom they say fatally struck a bicyclist with her car on Thursday night in Terryville. Police charged Janice Montalvo with leaving the scene of an accident involving a fatality, a felony, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor.

Foundation to Donate $20K to Comsewogue Schools

The Comsewogue for Students Foundation, now in its second year in existence, will fund $20,000 worth of teachers' projects after a year of successful fundraising.

New Owner Takes Over Upper Port Thrift Shop

In an Upper Port Jefferson storefront already known for being a thrift shop, a former employee has taken over the business and renamed it The Garage Sale. Amid a steady flow of customers on Tuesday afternoon, George Lyzak Jr. said he's got plans to revamp it into more than just a thrift store -- he'll sell cards, comics, antiques, coins and other collectibles, in addition to doing consignment sales and selling recycled and reclaimed items. Lyzak, who said he is a master carpenter, said he expects the revamped business to be done by August 1.
