What To Do In Port Jeff: #86 – Go Fish

On the beach, in harbor or out in the Sound there's plenty of places to fish.

When you're a seaside village with a history of shipbuilding, then you know that you're not far from some great fishing, and Port Jefferson is no exception. You can fish so many places in and around Port Jefferson.

By boat, you can head out into Port Jefferson Harbor and go for most of the same fish that you're likely to find out in the Long Island Sound. The harbor reaches all the way around Strongs Neck into Conscience Bay to the west with many good spots around the main Harbor up to on the northeastern reach.

Out of the harbor you can travel the entire length and breadth of the Long Island Sound to fish for fluke, porgy, striped bass, blue fish and black fish among other types, depending on the season.

Popular spots include the area around just outside the mouth of Port Jefferson Harbor, the shallows off of Belle Terre and Cedar Beach in Mt. Sinai. You can also travel into Mt. Sinai Harbor. Fishing is done from Old Field to the west of Port Jefferson Harbor all the way to the waters off Rocky Point in the east on the Sound.

Many adventurous anglers will head over to what's called the Middle Grounds where a shoal offers some great fishing as well. The Middle Grounds are marked by a small light house on a rocky reef, also called
Stratford Shoal Light. The reef is close to Bridgeport, CT.

Off the beach, there are also quite a few places to fish. If you head over to the eastern part of Cedar Beach, you can do some surf casting at night but you'll need a nighttime fishing permit. Access the beach at the end of Landing Road.

Another fishing spot is off the pier on the western edge of Cedar Beach at the mouth of Mr. Sinai harbor. If you travel all the way to the end of Harbor Beach Road in Mt. Sinai there's a fishing pier that's always a hot spot.

You can always head out on a party boat. There are a bunch that head out of Port Jefferson Harbor and Mt. Sinai Harbor. Try the Celtic Quest,  The Osprey and Luv2Fish to start.

If you're looking to rent a boat for the day, will help you out with one. You can also load up on bait there, pick up an extra rig or even buy a new pole. In Mt. Sinai, head over to Ralph's Fishing Station for bait or try
