Comsewogue Grad, Aide at Port Jeff Library is Artist and Educator Too

Lisa Perrin combines two loves by pursuing a career in art and education.

As a librarian aide, Lisa Perrin gets to work in every part of the doing something she loves while using her creative skills in “fun and useful ways.” Perrin is a 2006 graduate with Bachelor’s Degrees in Fine Arts and English. She graduated from SUNY New Paltz last year.

Perrin has had her illustrations featured in many publications and has been featured in exhibitions at her college. She also won “Outstanding Graduate” awards in studio art and in the honors program at New Paltz.

Recently the from plastic bottles that are not recycled by the Town of Brookhaven. To help spread awareness about the program and involve the youngest library patrons, Perrin illustrated a page for the kids to color and bring back to the library.

We spoke with Lisa recently about her art ad her back ground in education. We also asked her about the illustration she drew for the recycling program.

Did you study art or what is your art background? (Also what is your favorite medium to work in?)

I have always loved making art and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Drawing and Painting as an undergrad. My favorite medium might be plain old pencil on paper, acrylic paint, and more recently digital tools as well.

Are you a resident of the area and did you graduate from a local school?

I was born and raised in Port Jefferson Station and graduated from Comsewogue High School in 2006.

What is your educational background?

I hold a BFA in Art as well as a BA in English. I am hoping to be an artist and educator. I definitely want to further my education and go on to graduate school.

How did you develop the look of the coloring page? Was it off the top of your head or did you use inspiration from somewhere?

This was one of those funny moments when I knew exactly what I planned to do immediately after learning about it. My goal was to create an image that was kid-friendly and really conveyed the theme of recycling as a way to help the environment. I think I was inspired by all of the illustrated children’s books I spend a lot of time with in our Children’s Library.

What part of the library do you work in?

All of it! As an aide I have responsibilities within many different aspects of the library, but my favorite tasks are when I get to help with creative projects.

What do you like best about working in the library and your specific section?

The Port Jefferson Library is such an amazing place filled with such warm and helpful people. I love getting to interact with friendly library patrons, check out new books and movies, and help with the many programs that the library offers. I am so grateful to be a part of this library family and to get to use my creative skills in such fun and useful ways.
