Mind Games Unite Locals Of Multiple Generations

Scrabble increases in popularity while creating a new kind of social multi-generational community among locals.

For those of you out there that believe an expensive gaming or computer system featuring off the hook graphics is the only way to have a good time and face a tough challenge, think again. This past weekend, members of the North American Scrabble Players Association gathered to participate in their favorite "mind sport" at the scenic and tranquil Port Jefferson Village Center. Organized by local member Ginger White, players were invited to spend the entire afternoon challenging one another in the hopes of winning a variety of games and prizes.

Unlike most events where people are excited to jump in front of a camera to have their picture taken, this crowd remained quiet and focused on the revolving game board in front of them. A few members nodded to one another in recognition as they stretched to get a cup of coffee or switch opponents.

Every so often, players challenged a word on the board by looking it up on either an official chart or a computer located at the back of the room. From the intense expressions on their faces, it was apparent that this homespun board game has become just as important as Chess or Bridge.

Of course, there is the obvious allure of winning a substantial cash prize. And yes, playing Scrabble guarantees important unseen benefits, such as the ability to sharpen long term memory to it's constantly increasing roster of "mind athletes".  However, the most important thing going on in the large room with a view, was the emergence of a new, active social community that united people of multiple generations.

"People of  mixed professions come from all over the tri-state area." Mrs. White explained, pointing out a few of her regular attendees. "Some of our members are attorneys, public defenders, teachers and even housewives."

Having received such a good turnout this fall, Mrs. White looks forward to hosting another tournament in Port Jefferson this coming April. For anyone interested in participating, take advantage of the time between now and the next competition to brush up on your word skills.

Aside from gathering a few friends around the game board, Mrs. White encourages people to also go online to find additional competitions and communities-many of which are free and unite players from all over the world.

You can also visit the official NASPA website for a directory of additional competitions and a calendar of  local, official meeting groups.
