During Heat Wave, Firefighters Battle Mt. Sinai Blaze

Mt. Sinai Chief says it's possible that lightning caused fire on Crabapple Court.

A fire in Mt. Sinai at a home at 6 Crabapple Court might have been caused by lightning during a severe thunderstorm that rolled through the area, according to a chief in the Mt. Sinai Fire Department, although that determination is not official.

Heavy smoke and flames were still shooting out of the roof of the house late Friday afternoon as firefighters from five different departments responded to the call. Multiple ambulance and emergency workers crammed the streets in the outlying neighborhood to assist in the operation.

Cases of water and other drinks were delivered to the site for firefighters as they battled the blaze in alternative downpours and intense heat making the work that much more difficult.

Dozens of firefighters were on scene with multiple ladders dousing the flames from above amid billows of black and gray smoke pumping from the top of the home. Trucks from Mt. Sinai, Miller Place, Sound Beach, Coram and Port Jefferson responded to the fire.

The Chief from Mt. Sinai said so far there were no injuries to report at around 3 p.m.
