Port Jefferson Voters Approve $39.3M Budget

Voters on Tuesday approved the Port Jefferson School District’s $39.3 million budget proposal, with 72.8 percent of voter approval: 656 people voted for and 244 people voted against the under-cap budget.

"We are very thrilled that the community continues to support the program that we've put together for our students," superintendent Ken Bossert said. "We will continue to work hard to meet the expectations that this confidence in our district shows."

The tax levy will increase by 3.1 percent, which is below the level of what the district could have raised while still needing only a simple majority of voter approval under New York state’s tax levy cap law. The 2013-2014 budget calls for a year-over-year overall increase of 3.27 percent.

School officials have said the newly approved budget maintains the quality of education while taking into consideration the uncertain future of Port Jefferson village’s relationship with LIPA and National Grid.

Incumbent school board trustees Ellen Boehm and Kathleen Brennan won new terms, with 639 and 637 votes, respectively. Newcomer Adam DeWitt won a seat on the board with 615 votes. Incumbent Dennis Kahn received 430 votes.
