What To Do In Port Jeff: #97 - Shop For Used Books

In this week's installment we tell you what's to do in the literary life in Port Jefferson.

The building where the currently resides used to be The Good Times where Michael and Mary Mart ran their antiquarian bookshop for more than 30 years.

But if you love a good used book, have no fear, in its new life, the historic building is once again a used bookstore though with a new mission to support the . It's not The Strand, but it's Port Jefferson's own little piece of literary history.

The prices vary. Some books go for a buck. The most expensive go for $5 though they do have a few collectible books for sale at higher prices. The sale price is a suggested donation so patrons can theoretically give as little as they like.

They have a decent selection of titles with the biggest section being fiction. Though the stock is entirely managed by volunteers and stocked with donations so you can forgive them if they don't have every title you're looking for on the shelf.

There's also an extensive children's and young adult selection along with a host of non-fiction titles and coffee table books.

Sandra Swenk, a Friends of the Library member who once served as mayor of Port Jefferson, said that even the hanging wooden sign outside reflects the history and mission of the bookstore.

"It is a nice presence in an historic building on an historic street," she said.
