It's a unspoken rule on Long Island that if there is one of a kind of store then there needs to be another of the same kind right across the street or right down the road.
For years the stood alone with no other parts store less than a mere stone's throw away. Last week that all changed with the opening of the Auto Zone across the highway. So now whether you're heading east or west on Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station, you'll be lucky enough to find a giant auto part store to stop in at and bedazzle yourself with the endless supplies of headlights, spark plugs, floor mats and the inevitable Ed Hardy steering wheel covers and other car accessories.
Earlier this year before it opened, the Auto Zone had to make a to a more muted color because the local civic association though the original color was too bright.
Originally the color of the structure was to be a bright orange, but it was changed to what was described as a terracotta color. The logo and outside of many Auto Zone stores are orange and red in color.
