Map: Unemployment Continues Drop on Long Island

Though some towns still grapple with higher jobless rates than others.

Towns and large villages across Long Island saw unemployment rates drop in July, as the region continues to inch back from the high joblessness wrought by the Great Recession in 2009.

Nassau and Suffolk Counties combined had a 6.2 percent jobless rate in July, compared to 7.8 percent in July of 2012. In Nassau, Hempstead Village, with 7.7 percent unemployed, and Freeport Village, at 7 percent unemployed, have the highest jobless rate in the county, according to statistics from the state's Department of Labor.

The state charts jobless rates monthly for towns, cities and villages with high populations.

In Suffolk, Lindenhurst Village had the highest jobless rate at 8.1 percent. Meanwhile, Babylon represented the township with the highest unemployment, at 7.4 percent.

In every case, joblessness in July was lower than in the same month a year ago.
