Mavis Discount Tire to Take Over Ramp Ford Truck Space

Company is hiring for multiple position and set to open shop in Port Jefferson Station around April 22, according to a company representative.

If you’ve noticed a new coat of paint in a familiar teal blue color on the old Ramp Ford Truck space you might suspect it's the same tint as the Mavis Discount Tire company.

And you'd be right.

According to Ramp Ford Vice President Wayne Rampone Jr., Mavis has leased the building on Route 347 in Port Jefferson Station and is set to open in a few weeks.

Ramp has been trying to do something with that location for a while now.

Last year a Burger King was proposed for the truck lot but after residents pushed back against the idea, the plan was scrapped. Residents in the neighborhood behind the planned Burger King said they were worried about traffic, litter and the smell from the restaurant. Others said that Route 347 just did not need another fast food joint with Wendy's, Taco Bell and McDonalds all located nearby.

Similarly, the new location of Mavis Discount Tire in Port Jefferson Station joins sister company outlets on that stretch of road. A Mavis is already located on the same side of the road in Mt. Sinai at 556 Route 25A, less than three miles away. And there is another location in Rocky Point at 678 Route 25A, less than nine miles from the new shop.

According to comments on an application submitted to the Town of Brookhaven by Mavis in August 2012, the planning board made a few reccomendations to the company, including:

  • Provide an enclosed dumpster with a concrete pad
  • Install four trees planted adjacent to Nesconset Highway
  • Maintain an existing vegetated buffer 70 feet deep the width of the property along the eastern property line
  • Maintain a 6 foot high, solid fence along the west side of the buffer
  • Provide three handicap accessible parking spaces.
  • Patch or repave the parking lot.

A sign in the window advertises that the automotive repair shop is hiring for multiple positions, including mechanics, alignment technicians, tire installers and retail tires salespersons. For information on those positions the sign says to call at (631) 387-2649.

A person who answered the phone said that Mavis Discount Tire was a chain of stores that are company owned and that the store should be opened by April 22. He said that they were also hiring for managers and assistant managers as well as the positions listed on the sign.

Laurie Green from the Port Jefferson-Terryville Civic Association said that the group wasn't necessarily behind the new Mavis.

"The civic as a whole was not in favor of that type of establishment at that location for concerns with noise and fumes disturbing the neighbors directly behind the building," she said.

Green said that the residents closest to the new automotive repair center spoke at a Brookhaven Town meeting several months ago and came out in favor of the proposal.

"Since they are the ones who will be directly affected and they were in favor of it the civic did not argue further," she said.
